Hands-on learning is the essence of our curriculum. Children learn best through play and practical experience.
Thematic-based learning
At Kidya we adopt Thematic Based Learning as part of our curriculum. It is a way of teaching and learning where many developmental areas are connected together and integrated within a single theme.
Thematic learning lets teachers facilitate learning for each child who has his or her own way of learning things. It contextualises what children learn, gives them a way to apply it in real-life situations, and integrates content areas realistically so the knowledge is actually used day to day.
Early Years
- Hands-on learning. Learning by touching and doing. Given different materials to explore, children work out a function, a purpose and a role for them, which is where the ideas come from.
- Building relationships. With peers, adults and the environment. A safe, secure relationship early on lets young children build a relationship with the people they love.
- Meaningful play. Children interact confidently through their imagination. They are capable of engaging their own interest, and create their own relationship with the world through play.
Pre-Schoolers
- Observe, explore & experiment. Observation is a child’s cognitive development in motion. Exploring and experimenting is active learning: children learn through curiosity and inquiry.
- Questioning & investigating. Effective questioning in the classroom opens up conversation, inspires deeper thought and promotes child-to-child interaction.
- Discuss, share & reflect. Collaboration helps solve difficult problems. Brainstorming lets children exchange ideas and find creative ways to complete an activity together.
What the day is made of
The themes change every few weeks. The materials on the shelf are what stay constant.
Enhanced learning experiences
The themes carry across everything, so a week about growing things is also a week of counting, of new words, of paint under fingernails.
